The all-new BMW 5 Series Long Wheelbase (LWB) making its India debut. Learn about its larger dimensions, advanced features, and expected pricing ahead of its launch on July 24, 2024.
The new BMW 5 Series LWB has made its debut in India. This launch marks a significant milestone, as India is the first market outside of China and the only right-hand-drive market to get this stretched executive luxury sedan. The BMW 5 Series LWB joins BMW’s existing range of long-wheelbase sedans in India, which includes the 3 Series Gran Limousine and the 7 Series. This new model aims to compete directly with the segment leader, the long-wheelbase Mercedes E-Class. While prices and additional technical details will be revealed on July 24, 2024, here’s what we know so far.
2024 BMW 5 Series LWB: Bigger Dimensions and Stylish Design
One of the standout features of the new BMW 5 Series LWB is its increased size. It is now the largest car in its class, even bigger than the upcoming next-generation E-Class LWB. The new 5 Series LWB measures 5,175mm in length, 1,900mm in width, and 1,520mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,105mm. BMW refers to its design as a ‘2.5-box design’, with a flowing roofline that gives it a coupe-like appearance. Despite efforts to enhance its sporty look with 18-inch wheels and a Y-spoke design, the car’s large dimensions are still quite evident.
The M Sport variant seen here comes with sporty trim inserts on the front and rear bumpers. Light gold brushed metallic trim replaces traditional chrome, adding a modern touch to the car’s aesthetics. The grille is larger than before but not as oversized as on BMW’s SUVs. It features a horizontal orientation and can be backlit at night. The headlights resemble those of the E60 5 Series, while the tail-lights have been simplified into slim horizontal strips.
Spacious and Comfortable Rear Seat
The 2024 BMW 5 Series LWB offers a generous 3,105mm wheelbase, which is 110mm longer than the standard-wheelbase model and 212mm longer than the previous 5 Series. This extra length is entirely dedicated to the rear seat, providing ample legroom and headroom. The large windows and moon roof let in plenty of light, enhancing the sense of space. However, the absence of rear-seat sunshades and adjustable rear seats, a feature found in its rival, the Mercedes E-Class, might be disappointing for some. Despite this, the fixed seat with thicker cushioning and a generous 31-degree angle offers a comfortable seating experience.
BMW 5 Series LWB Advanced Features and Technology
The new 5 Series LWB comes packed with advanced features. The rear seat includes a touchscreen for climate control and a wireless phone charger. Up front, the car boasts a dual curved screen layout with a 14.9-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display. The iDrive 8.5 UI, although futuristic, can feel a bit complex. The center console houses essential controls, while the AC vents are hidden in the dashboard, operated by electronic toggles for a minimalist look.
The car includes front-seat ventilation, matrix LED headlamps, an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system, and multiple USB-C ports. While it lacks some features found in the 7 Series, such as the roof-mounted 8K TV screen, a two-screen rear-entertainment system is available as an option. The 5 Series LWB also features a robust ADAS suite, including front collision warning and braking, lane keep assist, and parking assist, although adaptive cruise control is missing.
2024 BMW 5 Series LWB Expected Price and Launch
The new 5 Series LWB will replace both the standard 5 Series and, eventually, the 6 Series GT. This shift caters to the increasing demand for chauffeur-driven luxury sedans in India. As a result, the new model is expected to be more expensive than the current 6 Series GT, priced between Rs 73.5 lakh and Rs 78.9 lakh. The price of the 2024 BMW 5 Series LWB will be announced on July 24, 2024, when it officially launches. With its luxurious features and spacious interior, the new BMW 5 Series LWB is set to provide tough competition in the luxury sedan market.
