Suzuki Jimny discontinued in Europe. Suzuki took this decision, which was announced a few years ago, is due to stricter emission norms in Europe. In Suzuki’s European lineup, the Jimny will be replaced by new models, mostly Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs).

Key Highlights

  • Suzuki Jimny won’t be on sale in Europe from this year.
  • Currently sold in Europe as an N1 category vehicle.
  • Jimny EV could go on sale in Europe by 2026.
  • New emission norms in Europe led to the discontinuation.
  • Suzuki to launch more electric vehicles, including the eVX electric SUV.

The Suzuki Jimny, known for its rugged off-road capabilities, has been a popular choice for adventure enthusiasts. However, the vehicle’s CO2 emissions exceed the limits set by European regulations, which led to its removal from Suzuki’s passenger vehicle lineup in 2021. It is currently sold as an N1 category commercial vehicle with two seats in many European markets. Although the Jimny is still available in some countries, Suzuki has already stopped taking new orders in most markets, except for a few like Germany.

Suzuki has introduced a special edition called the Jimny Horizon in select regions. This limited edition, with only 900 units, features a unique paint scheme, special graphics, and a few other distinguishing elements. The Jimny Horizon edition is also based on the commercial variant, meaning it is a two-seater.

Suzuki Jimny Discontinued in Europe: Here is the reason.

The main reason for discontinuing the Jimny in Europe is the new, stricter emission regulations across the continent. In the UK, for example, Suzuki has pointed to the zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate, which requires manufacturers to sell an increasing number of electric vehicles (EVs) over the next decade. This regulation starts at 22 percent in 2024, rises to 28 percent in 2025, and to 80 percent in 2030. Manufacturers face a GBP 15,000 (about Rs 16 lakh) penalty for every internal combustion engine (ICE) car sold above the permitted proportion.

Suzuki plans to offset CO2 emissions by introducing more electric vehicles in Europe. The brand will launch the eVX electric SUV next year and has also announced plans for an all-electric Jimny, which will be available in Europe first.

Although the sales of the Jimny 3-door will end in Europe, the SUV will continue to be available in other markets. The Jimny 5-door, which is made exclusively in India, will still be sold in many international markets. Despite being a slow seller in India, Suzuki has exported over 35,000 units of the made-in-India Jimny to various left and right-hand drive markets.
