New Nissan X-Trail Set to Revitalize Indian Market with Limited Import
Nissan X-Trail will be Launch in India as CBU

Nissan, which has maintained a modest presence in the Indian market with the Magnite compact SUV since April 2023, is gearing up to expand its offerings with the introduction of the new Nissan X-Trail. This move marks a significant step for the brand, which previously sold the X-Trail’s first and second-generation models in India but did not introduce the third generation despite showcasing it in the country.

Limited Import Strategy and Engine Details

The fourth-generation Nissan X-Trail, which has been available in international markets since 2021, has been spotted testing on Indian roads. The model is expected to arrive in India by August as a completely built unit (CBU), allowing Nissan to import up to 2,500 units without the need for homologation.

The new X-Trail will be powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, capable of producing 204hp and 305Nm of torque. While the availability of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) gearbox is confirmed, it remains unclear whether the SUV will come with 2WD or AWD configuration.

Petrol-Only Strategy and Market Dynamics

Nissan’s decision to offer the X-Trail with a petrol engine only is driven by market dynamics and government policies. Sources suggest that the current government’s taxation policy favors petrol engines, making them a more viable option for the Indian market. Introducing a hybrid variant, as showcased in 2022, would significantly increase taxes and, consequently, the price of the vehicle.

The move to offer the X-Trail with a petrol engine aligns with Nissan’s strategy to cater to petrol enthusiasts and maintain its presence in the Indian market. Despite showcasing hybrid models like the Juke and Qashqai in 2022, Nissan has decided to focus on the petrol variant for the X-Trail, keeping in mind customer preferences and market conditions.

Nissan X-Trail Competition,Price and Future Prospects

With its 7-seater configuration and petrol engine, the Nissan X-Trail is expected to compete with the Skoda Kodiaq, which is priced at Rs 39.99 lakh (ex-showroom, India) and is also available only with a petrol engine.

Nissan’s decision to introduce the X-Trail and its plans to revamp the Magnite through a facelift indicate a strategic effort to maintain consumer interest in the brand and revitalize its position in the Indian market.
