McLaren is poised to reveal its next groundbreaking hypercar, a successor to the P1, on October 6, marking a decade since the P1 debuted as the F1’s successor. This highly anticipated model, currently codenamed the P18, is expected to showcase cutting-edge advancements in hybrid technology, reinforcing McLaren’s commitment to innovation. The teaser video released by McLaren features the iconic F1 and P1 models, signaling that this new vehicle will set a new benchmark for hypercars.

Key Highlights:

  • P1 successor continues with a petrol-hybrid powertrain.
  • Codenamed P18, with no final name revealed yet.
  • Next-gen V8 engine and hybrid system to deliver over 1000hp.
  • Emphasis on lightweight design, targeting a sub-2000kg vehicle.
  • Electric McLaren supercars remain a future prospect.

McLaren P1 Successor: What to Expect?

The upcoming hypercar is expected to leverage the advancements in electrification that have emerged since the P1’s debut 12 years ago. While a fully electric McLaren supercar is still years away, this model will feature a next-gen hybrid powertrain, likely surpassing the P1’s 916hp. The new hypercar will use an all-new V8 engine, which is different from those in McLaren’s current range, along with a next-generation hybrid system capable of exceeding 1000hp.

The final name of this model is still a mystery, though McLaren is expected to continue its tradition of incorporating ‘1’ into the title, much like the F1 and P1 models. McLaren’s CEO, Michael Leiters, has shared insights into the company’s reluctance to produce fully electric supercars just yet, citing the current weight of such vehicles. Leiters stated that McLaren prefers to prioritize lightweight design over simply boosting horsepower, aiming for a supercar that weighs less than 2000kg.
