Indian automakers reported varied results for their September 2024 sales performance, reflecting both growth and decline. While Hyundai and Tata faced reduced domestic and export sales, Maruti Suzuki saw a slight sales increase due to strong export performance and sales to other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Meanwhile, Mahindra and Toyota continued their upward trajectory in the Indian market.

Hyundai Motors: Sales Decline Continues

Hyundai reported cumulative sales of 64,201 units in September 2024, reflecting a year-on-year drop of 10.38%. Domestic sales fell by 3,140 units, totaling 51,101, while exports dropped by nearly 25% to 13,100 units. Despite this, Hyundai saw a modest month-on-month increase in domestic sales, driven mainly by its popular SUVs, which accounted for 70% of total sales. CNG variants made up 13.8% of the total.

Kia India: Double-Digit Growth

Kia India experienced a positive month, with a 17% sales growth, amounting to 23,523 units. The Sonet remained the top performer, contributing over 10,000 units. The Seltos and Carens followed closely with 6,959 and 6,217 units, respectively. Kia also exported 2,006 units. The company recorded a 10% growth in quarterly sales compared to the second quarter of 2024, with the Sonet, Seltos, and Carens dominating their portfolio.

Maruti Suzuki: Exports Drive Growth

While Maruti Suzuki’s domestic sales slightly dropped from 1,53,106 units in September 2023 to 1,48,061 units in 2024, exports were a bright spot. The brand shipped 27,728 units, up from 22,511 last year, leading to a cumulative sales figure of 1,84,727 units. Maruti’s compact car and sedan sales struggled, but its utility vehicle lineup grew marginally. Sales to other OEMs further bolstered Maruti’s performance.

Mahindra & Mahindra: Consistent Growth

Mahindra continued its strong sales run, posting a 24% growth in domestic sales, which stood at 51,062 units. The company’s exports in the passenger vehicle segment added 1,528 units, bringing total PV sales to 52,590 units. Mahindra’s Thar Roxx is set to open bookings in October 2024, while its first EV from the Born Electric lineup will launch by year-end.

Tata Motors: EV Sales Decline

Tata Motors faced a 9% drop in sales, with domestic passenger vehicle sales totaling 41,063 units. Export sales were also cut in half, reaching just 250 units in September 2024. The company’s EV sales also fell by 23%, reflecting broader challenges in the electric vehicle market. Cumulatively, Tata saw a 15% decline year-on-year in domestic sales.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor: A Notable Rise

Toyota reported a solid 14% growth year-on-year, with total sales reaching 26,847 units. Domestic sales made up 23,802 units, while exports contributed 3,045 units. The brand’s total sales for the first half of the fiscal year hit 1,62,623 units, a record for the company, compared to 1,23,939 units in the same period last year.
