BMW Motorrad enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of the new GS model, and their patience is about to be rewarded. Markus Flasch, the head of BMW Motorrad, has confirmed in an interview that a new GS model, likely to be named the BMW R 12 GS, will soon make its debut. While the spy shots circulating are not recent, they offer a glimpse into what promises to be an exciting addition to BMW’s lineup.
Derived from the BMW R 12 nineT
The upcoming BMW R 12 GS will be based on the BMW R 12 nineT, unveiled in 2023. However, it will be enhanced with more suspension travel and off-road-ready wheels and tires to embody the rugged GS essence. The spy shots indicate that the new GS, or potentially named G/S as a tribute to the original, is already under development.
BMW 12 R GS Impressive Features for Off-Road Enthusiasts
The BMW R 12 GS will feature a 1,170 cc boxer twin engine mounted on a tubular steel frame, delivering power to a 21-inch front wheel with long-travel suspension. The bike’s off-road capability is further emphasized by its 90/90-21 front tire, providing ample traction in challenging terrain. At the rear, a 170/60-17 wheel-tire combination is expected, with cross-spoked wheels likely to feature tubeless rubber. With substantial suspension travel expected, ground clearance is estimated to be around 250 mm.
BMW R 12 GS Advanced Technology and Performance
The BMW R 12 GS is anticipated to come equipped with a circular TFT screen as its instrument console, along with a comprehensive electronics package. The heart of the bike will be the familiar 1,170 cc air-cooled boxer twin, similar to the one found in the BMW R 12 nineT, delivering 108 bhp and 115 Nm of torque. However, the boxer twin might receive a slight tweak in tuning for a broader torque curve and enhanced low-end power delivery.
Awaiting the Debut
While the exact debut date of the BMW R 12 GS remains uncertain, BMW Motorrad’s return to the EICMA show in 2024 suggests that the bike could be unveiled at this event, or possibly at the Intermot show in Germany. Enthusiasts can expect concrete information and a potential look at a production model by late 2024, setting the stage for a thrilling new adventure in the world of adventure motorcycles.
