Land Rover Discovery to get petrol, hybrid and EV powertrains
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is preparing a significant overhaul for its flagship Land Rover Discovery, aiming to give the next-generation SUV a distinct identity. The current Discovery, in production since 2017, is the oldest model in Land Rover’s lineup. The upcoming sixth-generation Discovery will have a fresh design, a new platform, and a focus on “family adventure,” making it stand out from the increasingly popular Defender.

Land Rover Discovery: You Should know about
The sales performance of the current Discovery has been lackluster, especially since the launch of the Defender. Last year, JLR sold only 16,750 units of the Discovery globally, a stark contrast to the 1,10,367 Defenders sold in the same period. This underperformance has prompted JLR to rethink the Discovery’s positioning.
The new Discovery could incorporate some MPV-like design cues, potentially making it a competitor to vehicles like the Volkswagen ID. Buzz. This clean-sheet redesign aims to establish the Discovery as a standalone brand, akin to Defender, Jaguar, and Range Rover.
The next-gen Discovery will utilize JLR’s MLA (Modular Longitudinal Architecture) platform, which is already used in the current Range Rover. This platform allows for a variety of powertrains, including petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric. JLR has announced plans to electrify its lineup by 2026, and the Discovery 6 is expected to be one of the models to receive an electric variant. Additionally, a high-performance version of the Discovery is anticipated, echoing the success of the Defender Octa.
While the exact timeline for the debut of the new Discovery is not yet confirmed, it is expected to be revealed after the introduction of the all-new Range Rover EV, which is slated for sometime in 2025.
