BMW M5 Performance and Powertrain
Under the new G90 M5’s muscular body lies an updated version of the previous F90’s 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine. This powerhouse produces 577bhp at 5600 – 6500rpm, a slight decrease from the 2018 model’s 592bhp, with the Competition version peaking at 616bhp. However, the new M5 stands out with the addition of a 194bhp electric motor, integrated into its eight-speed transmission and powered by a 22.1kWh battery pack (18.6kWh usable). This hybrid setup delivers a combined output of 727bhp and 1000Nm of torque.
Performance Metrics
Despite the impressive power figures, the new hybrid system adds significant weight. The new M5 weighs 2435kg, 570kg more than its predecessor, affecting its power-to-weight ratio. The previous F90 M5 had a 312bhp/ton ratio, which the Competition model increased to 330bhp/ton. The new hybrid M5, however, has a 294bhp/ton ratio. This results in a 0-100kmph time of 3.5 seconds, a tenth slower than the previous standard model and two tenths slower than the old M5 Competition. The top speed remains the same at 250kmph, or 305kmph with the optional M Driver’s Package.
Hybrid Benefits
The hybrid system offers some advantages, including an all-electric range of up to 69km (WLTP). Charging capabilities will start at 7.4kW, increasing to 11kW in November. The M5’s power is distributed through an advanced M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, with rear-wheel steering that allows for up to 1.5 degrees of rear wheel movement, enhancing maneuverability and agility.
Suspension and Brakes
The new M5 features adaptive suspension, allowing the driver to adjust the ride for various driving conditions. Standard brakes include six-piston front and single-piston rear steel brakes, with the option for carbon-ceramic brakes, all of which can be adjusted from within the cabin. The car is equipped with 285-section front and 295-section rear Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 tyres, mounted on staggered 20 and 21-inch wheels.
BMW M5 Design and Interior
The design of the new M5 aligns with BMW M’s current aesthetic, featuring an enlarged, illuminated twin-kidney grille. The front and rear arches are more pronounced, contributing to a powerful stance. The rear bumper and diffuser house quad 100mm exhaust tips, providing the authentic sound of a V8, complemented by BMW IconicSounds inside the cabin.
Inside, the new M5 sports a flat-bottomed M steering wheel and dedicated M buttons for custom modes. A central M control panel, a full-width curved screen with BMW’s latest Operating System 8.5, and vibrant ambient lighting enhance the driving experience.
Availability and Pricing
The new 2025 BMW M5 will be available from November, with UK prices starting at £110,500 (approximately Rs 1.17 crore, excluding Indian taxes and duties).
