Genesis G80 EV Magma will compete with Mercedes-Amg and BMW M division.
Genesis, the luxury vehicle division of the South Korean automaker Hyundai, has unveiled its new performance sub-brand, Magma, at the 2024 New York Auto Show. Positioned to rival the likes of Mercedes-Benz’s AMG and BMW’s M division, Magma made its debut with the GV60 Magma concept. Now, at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show, Magma has showcased its prowess with the unveiling of the G80 EV Magma, a high-performance sedan based on the Electrified G80.
The G80 EV Magma boasts a range of upgrades that surpass even those of its GV60-based predecessor. Its standout features include a lowered stance, widened chassis, unique grille and front fascia, pumped fenders, a new rear fascia, and 21-inch wheels with aerodynamic covers. The concept also introduces the exclusive Acme Blue color, inspired by the blue hue seen in hot flames, specifically designed for the Chinese market.
Genesis has enhanced the chassis of the G80 EV Magma with sport-tuned suspension, resulting in a wider track, and a powerful brake package with ventilated rotors front and rear. The wheels are of a lightweight design, aimed at reducing unsprung mass.
Inside, the G80 EV Magma features a luxurious mix of Alcantara, quilted leather, and real carbon fiber, with the carbon fiber showcasing a blue weave to complement the exterior color.
While specific powertrain details have not been disclosed, the standard Electrified G80 comes equipped with an 87.2-kWh battery and, in its most potent configuration, offers a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain producing up to 365 horsepower.
Genesis has not confirmed production plans for the G80 EV Magma concept. However, a gas-powered G80 Magma Special sedan, showcased earlier in New York, is slated for launch in West Asia at a later date. Details regarding this model have yet to be revealed.
In addition to the G80 EV Magma, Genesis used the Beijing Auto Show to introduce an updated version of the Electrified G80. The updated model boasts a slightly longer wheelbase, benefiting rear-seat passengers, as well as new 19-inch wheels, an electronically controlled charging port cover, more trim options, and a reduction in noise, vibration, and harshness levels.
Genesis also presented an updated GV70 at the Beijing Auto Show, featuring several styling changes. The model is set to go on sale in Korea next month, with a U.S. launch likely planned for later this year, suggesting it will arrive as a 2025 model.
